NORTHERN ARMY COMMANDER INAUGURATES ROAD BRIDGE

UDHAMPUR: A 60 meter span  road bridge constructed by Project Beacon of the Border  Roads Organisation (BRO) at Km 17.5 on the Udhampur Bye Pass connecting National Highway 44 at Jaikhani was inaugurated  by Lt Gen KT Parnaik, PVSM, UYSM, YSM, GOC-in-C Northern Command  on 10  Mar 2012. The bridge has been built to double lane specification with a load bearing capacity of 70 tonnes. The construction of the bridge commenced in Jan 2009 and has been constructed at a total cost of
Rupees 2.20 crores.

The bridge will replace the old trusted 40 ton Capacity Bailey Bridge that had been the sole lifeline along this road. The bridge will provide much needed relief to road users with 100% heavy traffic now being  diverted through this road. The bridge has been named “Shankar Bridge” in memory of Late Supdt BR-II Shankar Prasad of 118 Road Construction Company who made the supreme sacrifice of his life, while restoring road communication during Snow Clearance Operations on 07 Jan 2012 on the Kishtwar- Sinthan-Anantnag road.

The Army Commander complimented Project Beacon, popularly known as ‘Lifeline of Kashmir’ amongst the locals, for the various tasks being executed in the state of J&K. He was particularly appreciative of the glorious  service rendered by the  Project  in snow clearance operations  during the recent heavy snowfall in the State.     “Your Selfless Service and dedication to duty  will further cement the lifelong bond of  friendship between the  Awam and the Armed  Forces” the Army Commander said.

Soon after the Bridge was officially declared open, traffic started plying smoothly from both sides of  the highway and the joy  was evident on the faces of the people in the city. The inaugural ceremony was attended by  a host of  Military and civil dignitaries.
